Today a Sharonville – West side family faces a life and death battle with Cystic Fibrosis. This debilitating disease shortens the life of its patients, on a day-by-day basis, as fluid fills the lungs and slowly asphyxiates the victim. Luckily, Cystic Fibrosis patients now have medical hope through technological breakthroughs using lung organ transplantation. Lungs from an organ donor are used to give the ultimate gift of life to a patient in need.
James Hamblin, age 38, of Sharonville, Ohio, has suffered all his life with Cystic Fibrosis. Despite his medical challenges and lengthy hospitalizations, he has worked full time for sixteen years at the Lodge Care Center, a skilled nursing facility in Loveland, Ohio. James has enjoyed cooking for the over one hundred and thirty residents and employees until last year, when on his birthday in February, James got sick and had to be off work over four months. Since then his need for oxygen is 24/7 so he had to quit work. He realized his disease was getting worse and that’s when his doctor suggested the double lung transplant.
James was evaluated by medical experts at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio and is considered an excellent candidate for a double lung transplant and has been placed on the waiting list. While the option is truly a miracle of modern science, its medical costs are extremely high due to the complexity of the procedure and the extensive pre and postoperative care. Unfortunately James’s insurance does not cover the full extent of transplanted related expenses. This leaves James and his new wife, Amy, on a daily roller coaster ride consisting of hope and uncertainty.
James lost his older brother Ron Hamblin to Cystic Fibrosis in January 2008. Ron had decided to be placed on the list for the double lung transplant but it was too late. Ron’s body could not fight the cystic disease anymore and he went on to a better place. We miss Ron dearly and we do not want to lose James to this awful disease. If you could see with your own eyes the agony Cystic Fibrosis has brought to the Hamblin family, it would deeply affect your desire to help.
The Hamblin family cannot face this challenge alone. As compassionate family members, friends, neighbors and concerned citizens, we are asking you to help raise money so that James can pursue this medical miracle of life. We are having an Italian Dinner Benefit Dance to raise money for James’s new lungs.
We are asking for any donations to be raffled off at the dance. Also donations can be made at any US Bank into the “Cure 4 James” account. Every little bit helps. Please find it in your heart to help give the gift of life. Thank you for your compassion, and please keep James in your prayers.
For additional information, or to donate an item for the raffle, call Connie at 513-289-9161, Amanda 513-240-4116 or Kevin 513-276-315. Donations can be picked up or mailed to: Kevin Vanover

Oscar Night America Party...
People Working Cooperatively Presents Humana’s Hometown Hollywood,
Cincinnati’s Only Official Oscar Night® America Party
CINCINNATI (January 22, 2009) – People Working Cooperatively (PWC) invites tri-state residents to enjoy the Hollywood glitz and glamour of this year’s Academy Awards at Cincinnati’s only official Oscar Night® America party Sunday, February 22, at the Cincinnati Hilton Netherland Plaza. Themed Hometown Hollywood, the 12th annual event is one of only 52 official parties sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held across the country on Oscar Night.
Supported in part by title sponsor, Humana, the gala runs from 5:30 p.m. to midnight and benefits PWC’s mission to provide critical home repair services to low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
“Oscar Night has quickly become a renowned and cherished tradition in the city of Cincinnati,” said Jock Pitts, president of PWC. “Each year, the gala gives members of the community the opportunity to not only be a part of one of America’s most prominent affairs, but also one of Cincinnati’s greatest causes – to help residents facing difficult circumstances safely live in their own homes.”
The five-star Hollywood evening includes a red carpet welcome, screaming fans, celebrity look-a-likes and characters, live entertainment, martini bar, appetizers and a three-course gourmet meal. Throughout the evening, guests will have the opportunity to participate in live and silent auctions and a raffle giveaway that includes a $5,000 cash prize or a trip to a Warner Brothers movie premier in Hollywood or New York City.
In addition to watching the awards ceremony live via a giant screen, guests also receive the same official program distributed to guests at the Oscar® presentation at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
The night will be capped with a VIP After Party with a casino and dancing starting at 9 p.m. The party includes a chocolate bar, a caricature artist, photo booths, and champagne for the first $100 guests. Cost for the After Party for non-gala patrons is $20 at the door.
“Just as it is in Hollywood, Oscar Night Cincinnati will be a top-notch affair,” said Amy Finnegan, co-chair of PWC’s Oscar Night for the past 2 years. “From start to finish, our goal is to make guests feel like they are on the A-list. More importantly, we want people to walk away with a good understanding of how their participating contributed to an incredibly worthwhile mission.”
In 2008, PWC’s Oscar Night gala raised a record-breaking $105,000, placing it as one of the most successful Oscar Night events in the country. This year, PWC has set a fundraising goal of $110,000, which will directly benefit its Modifications for Mobility program.
Tickets for Oscar Night are $150 per person and are available for purchase at www.pwchomrepairs.org or by calling (513) 351-7921.
