This is Lauren Bells, a three year old who has just been diagnosed (Sept 14, 2007) with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). This is an aggressive brain stem tumor which commonly affects children ages 5 - 10 years old. It is estimated that there are less than 100 cases per year in the U.S.The statistics are dire:
· Due to the nature of this cancer, there are no surgical options available.
· With radiation, the median survival rate is less than 12 months.
· The chance of survival beyond 1 year is less than 8%.
